Some managers appear in every CC of an email, like a footnote in every presentation.
Is there a meeting? They're present, but not really listening.
Did you assign responsibility? They say, “I’ve delegated it,” yet still pull the strings behind the scenes.
Was a decision made? A last-minute comment arrives and derails the entire plan.
Is this micromanagement?
Or shadow leadership?
Here’s the difference: A micromanager never lets go of control.
A shadow leader pretends to let go, but runs the show from behind the curtain.
And both create the same feeling within the team:
“So... who actually owns this?”
Leadership is not about guiding invisibly — it’s about creating space through trust.
Remember: When it crosses the line, leadership doesn't evolve — it turns into a shadow.
If you still can’t trust your team, the problem may not be the team.
