7 Deadly Communication Sins & Their Antidotes

In any meeting or presentation, things may seem to flow smoothly — until suddenly, attention drifts, tension rises, or you find yourself wishing you weren’t there. Almost always, at the heart of these situations is a communication misstep — a deadly mistake.

Let me share with you the most common communication traps to avoid and the practical antidotes you can use instead. Here’s my list:

1️⃣ GossipingAntidote: Honesty & Direct Communication
➔ Instead of talking behind someone’s back, choose to speak face to face. Be mindful of indirect feedback — it’s not always constructive.

2️⃣ JudgingAntidote: Empathy
➔ Rather than jumping to criticism, try to understand why the other person might be behaving that way. If empathy comes naturally to you, you’re lucky — if not, it’s a skill worth striving for.

3️⃣ NegativityAntidote: Gratitude
➔ Instead of constantly complaining, focus on what’s going well. (Pro tip: call your mom — they have a magic way of reconnecting us with gratitude.)

4️⃣ ComplainingAntidote: Solution-Oriented Thinking
➔ Naming problems is important, but so is proposing solutions. If someone keeps complaining, gently remind them of the energy they bring to the space. In leadership or decision-making meetings, I’ve often said: “If you don't have a solution, just observe for a bit.”

5️⃣ Making ExcusesAntidote: Owning Responsibility
➔ Saying “Yes, I made a mistake” brings a deep sense of freedom. It’s a mark of humility — and true leadership.

6️⃣ DogmatismAntidote: Open-Mindedness
➔ Creating space for different perspectives opens powerful doors for growth. Our mindsets are largely shaped by age 0–7 — changing them later isn’t easy. Professional support can really help.

7️⃣ Lying / ExaggeratingAntidote: Honesty
➔ Telling things as they are strengthens relationships and builds trust. Extroverts, take extra care here — the line between storytelling and exaggeration can get blurry!
